Unskilled Workers in an Economy with Skill-Biased Technology

چکیده
This paper contributes to the search theory of unemployment by endogenously generating matching functions for skilled and unskilled workers from a wage-posting game. The model is capable of producing a positive skill premium and a positive wage di®erential among homogeneous unskilled workers. The skill premium arises from a skill-biased technology; the wage di®erential among unskilled workers sustains because a lower wage is compensated by a higher chance of getting the job. The model provides useful explanations for the observed dynamic patterns of within-skill and between-skill wage di®erentials in the 1970s and 1980s and for the relative cyclical volatility of hours of work by di®erent skill groups of workers. This paper studies the interlinked relationship between globalisation and technological upgrading in affecting employment and wages of skilled and unskilled workers in a middle income developing country. It exploits a unique longitudinal firm‐level database that covers all manufacturing firms in Turkey over the 1992‐2001 period. Turkey is taken as an example of a developing economy that, in tha...
متن کاملSkill-Biased Technical Change1
Skill-Biased Technical Change is a shift in the production technology that favors skilled over unskilled labor by increasing its relative productivity and, therefore, its relative demand. Traditionally, technical change is viewed as factor-neutral. However, the observed rapid rise in the relative wage of skilled workers in conjunction with an upward trend in their relative supply means that rec...

In this lecture, we address the evidence on the Skill Biased Technical Change hypothesis. There are at least Þve class of theories that I can discern, and I'll say something about each time permitting: 1. Capital skill complementarity 2. Correlations and timing: Computer technology and skill upgrading 3. Characteristics of technology and tasks: Changes in the organization of work 4. Nelson/Phel...

This paper develops and evaluates a novel mechanism through which imports of unskilled intermediates (offshoring) increase wages of both skilled and unskilled workers by inducing skill-biased technology adoption and innovation in developed countries. Data for a panel of manufacturing industries in the United States over 1974-2005, strongly support the technology channel with a doubling of offsh...
